About Buy BCwild

The Buy BCwild Directory is a unique resource guide to products from British Columbia’s non-timber forest product (NTFP) sector. The Directory is comprised of over 200 listings of mainly small-scale NTFP-based businesses and service providers.
The goal of the Buy BCwild Directory is to raise consumer awareness of the abundance of local goods and services that are present in, and can be provided by our forests, and provide a voice for the NTFP sector. The Directory connects consumers directly with producers and service providers, helping to generate important income in rural and resource-based communities and supporting ‘Buy Local’.
In 2010, the Centre for Livelihoods and Ecology (CLE) discontinued publication of the hardcopy of the Buy BCwild Directory and created a more sustainable and available version – the eDirectory.
The CLE has worked since 2004 on supporting the sustainable development of the non-timber forest resources sector in British Columbia and beyond. The Buy BCwild Directory grew out of on-going and in-depth consultations with sector stakeholders, including many small businesses working in the sector, who expressed the need for better, more direct contacts with consumers, and the need to raise awareness and educate the public about the benefits of these resources to local economies, to the environment, and to consumers themselves. This initiative is also one part of an increasingly recognized need for food security and local food production, including supporting livelihoods dependent upon forest-based and natural resources.
